What are Mardi Gras King Cakes, Fat Tuesday and Twelve Night?

I just want to know what these words got to do with the Mardi Gras that's going on now somewhere in New Orleans, Los Angeles and South America. Can someone familiar with these terms enlighten me? Thank you and Happy Mardi Gras!!!

1) A King Cake is a type of cake served during Carnival and Mardi Gras (see explanation at the link below); 2) Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday; in French, Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40 days of Lent in the Christian calendar. Lent is the somber period (that may include fasting) before Easter, and Mardi Gras is the party before Lent; 3) The Carnival Celebration begins on January 6th (the 12th Night after Christmas) and ends on Mardi Gras.
