What is typically served with New Orleans beignets?
anonymous asked:
I've seen that they are usually served with jams and jellies. Is there a specific type or flavor of jam or jelly that they are served with? Or are they most often served plain? I DO know that they have LOADS of powdered sugar on them, but besides that, what is traditionally served with/on them?

if a jelly, maybe strawberry or anything that you'd see in a doughnut…. My grandmother used to make those when i was younger… she never really used anything.
Cafe au Lait.
I just got back form New Orleans and had a couple with coffee but keep them plain with sugar on top
Beignets are usually covered with mounds of powdered sugar, but often coated with granulated sugar sometimes mixed with cinnamon.
There are lots of variations on the traditional square beignet.
For many years the beignet was made in the shape of balls or squares and covered with mocha frosting. Later the beignet was cut in the shape of a doughnut and raised doughnut was born.
This is a very interesting site with much more info dating way back, including the civil war and how beignets got it's beginning in New Orleans,
I had them at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans and I don't remember anything on them but powdered sugar. Most people had coffee with chicory but I don't drink coffee.
Drink New Orleans style coffee with them. This coffee has chicory in it. Nothing else is needed.
