There are variants, but they all have this in common: they're sweet. Here's one, for example, which I found by doing a Gsearch on "bananas foster" and "sauce":
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup banana liqueur
4 bananas, peeled and sliced
1/3 cup light rum
I don't know where that is and have never heard of it but omg, my mouth is watering!!!! Have you tried looking up the non-alcoholic version of the sauce at allrecipes.com? That's a good place to go for recipes.
2 tbsp. butter
1/4 c. light brown sugar, packed
Dash nutmeg or cinnamon
2 tbsp. banana liqueur, if desired
1/2 c. rum
Melt butter in skillet. Add brown sugar, nutmeg or cinnamon, orange peel, banana liqueur and 2 tablespoons of the rum. Stir until blended. Boil until syrupy.
Sorta not related but, Milk and sugar is delsih on french toast!
I am a former chef and bananas foster is a simple mix of bananas cooked in butter and brown sugar, then flambed with rum and banana liquer, and generally served over ice cream, with the french toast idea make the bananas ahead and keep it warm, I would sliced or chunk the bananas, usually they are serve in halves. The liquer is optional a bit of vanilla and a dash of cream or carnation mlik just to keep it smooth and not solidify.
Even to keep them warm just place them over a pot of warm water in a small bowl.
The classic recipe is made by sauteing banana's in clarified butter. About 1 Tbsp of brown sugar and a 1 tsp of cinamon is added. When this is nice and brown and bubbly, a shot of Myer's Dark Rum and a shot of banana liquor is added. Its a flambe so be careful! Flames WILL be shooting out of the pan!
Take the pan off the heat and when the alcohol burns off, it is ready to put on the French Toast.
